고령화 사회 진입과 맞물려 건강하게 늙어가는 웰에이징(well-aging)이 시대의 화두로 떠올랐다. 이러한 라이프스타일의 변화에 따라 코스메슈티컬(cosmeceutical)시장의 성장세가 그야말로 가파르다. 코스메슈티컬은 화장품(cosmetics)과 의약품(pharmaceutical)의 합성어로 피부 재생, 주름개선, 미백효과 등 의학적으로 검증된 기능성 성분을 포함한 화장품을 뜻한다. 한국보건산업진흥원에 따르면 2016년 코스메슈티컬 세계시장 규모는 약 43조원으로 추정되며, 오는 2022년에는 87억 달러에 달할 것으로 전망된다. 이처럼 코스메슈티컬 시장은 최근 10년 동안 괄목할 만한 성장률을 이어가며 전체 화장품시장의 블루칩으로 떠오른 상태다. 이러한 가운데 다우그룹(CEO 박천해)의 행보가 눈길을 끈다. 오염되어가는 자연환경을 개선하고자 화학성분이 전혀 들어가지 않으면서도 성능은 탁월한 친환경 제품 개발에 매진 중인 다우그룹 박천해 CEO와 인터뷰를 나눴다.

다우그룹은 코스메슈티컬 시장에 당당히 도전장을 내밀었다. 코스메슈티컬 시장을 선도하고자 새로운 도전을 시작한 다우그룹의 한방 화장품은 이미 그 경쟁력을 공인받은 상태다. 다우그룹에서 선보이는 한방 화장품은 모든 화장품에 인체유래 지방줄기 세포 배양액을 함유했다는 점에서 차별성을 획득한다. 유언희 부사장(연구개발원장)은 “기존 화장품이 피부미용과 아름다움을 추구하는 것에 그쳤다면 줄기세포 배양액을 함유한 다우그룹의 화장품은 기존 화장품의 기능에 피부의 손상된 부분과 미세한 흉터 자국 및 여드름, 기미 및 피부 트러블 등에 대한 치유기능이 포함되어 있다”고 설명했다. 이어 “인체 줄기세포로부터 수많은 성장인자들을 선별 배양하여 화장품에 응용함으로써 미백 및 주름개선과 피부의 장시간 보습효과가 탁월하다”고 덧붙였다. 다우그룹 박천해 CEO는 이를 특징으로 하는 다양한 화장품 제품군을 출시해 국내는 물론 전 세계 코스메슈티컬 시장에 혁신을 가져오겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.

줄기세포 배양액 함유 화장품으로 새 반향 일으켜

“인체의 줄기세포는 미분화 상태의 세포로 자가 복제능력을 가지고 있으며 우리 몸을 구성하는 210여 가지의 조직세포로 분화할 수 있는 만능세포입니다. 자신과 동일한 형태와 능력을 가진 다른 줄기세포를 만들어낼 수 있는 것은 물론 인체에 필요한 다른 조직으로 변화하거나 손상된 부위로 줄기세포 스스로 찾아갈 수 있는 능력이 있습니다. 특히 지방줄기세포의 경우 다양한 세포로의 분화가 가능하고 끊임없이 자기복제를 통해 자가 재생산이 가능합니다.”

중국과 우즈베키스탄을 기점으로 세계시장 개척하겠다

다우그룹은 국내시장을 비롯해 해외시장 개척에도 충력을 기울이겠다는 각오다. 그 일환으로 중국과 우즈베키스탄, 러시아, 필리핀, 베트남, 인도네시아 등에서 다우그룹의 코스메슈티컬 제품을 론칭할 계획을 마쳤다.

“중국과 우즈베키스탄에 생산기점을 잡을 예정입니다. 이에 생산은 중국과 우즈베키스탄에서, 모든 생산 설비 및 화장품 원료는 한국에서 일체 공급하여 생산할 계획입니다. 이를 위해 중국과 우즈베키스탄의 투자자와 공동으로 회사 설립을 추진 중에 있습니다. 다우그룹과의 합작 회사를 설립하여 중국과 우즈베키스탄 시장을 공략할 것입니다. 이후에는 러시아, 중앙아시아의 CIS 국가 등으로의 수출을 도모하여 세계시장에서도 통하는 다우그룹의 경쟁력을 입증하겠습니다.”

다우그룹은 코스메슈티컬 사업 외에도 친환경 사업으로 무세제 세탁볼과 자화수 샤워기를 생산하고 있으며, 건축사업, 토목사업, 전기공사, 발전사업, 골재사업, 우드 펠렛 사업 등을 필리핀에서 진행 중에 있다. 최근에는 필리핀 클락 신도시 개발과 관련한 토목공사를 약 2,500억 원에 수주하는 등 기업 안팎으로 좋은 소식이 들려오고 있다. 이에 박천해 CEO는필리핀의 사업파트너와 함께 화장품 사업을 진행하기 위하여 준비 중에 있으며, 베트남과 중국, 인도네시아 등을 중심으로 화장품 사업을 함께할 투자자를 물색하고 있다. 필리핀 클락 신도시에 5성급 호텔건설을 비롯해 공원시설의 시행, 시공, 분양까지 책임질 예정인 다우그룹 박천해 CEO. 이 기세를 이어나가 코스메슈티컬 시장으로 영토를 확장해 세계 유명화장품과도 어깨를 나란히 하는 세계 속의 다우그룹이 되기를 진심으로 기대해본다.
